Originally from Louisiana, I relocated to the
Portland, Oregon area where I was active in public service. Besides
being a working adult, I had the opportunity to observe the hectic
working schedules of other parents.
Help from extended
families or family staff are now for only a few privileged people,
and most women are no longer at home during working hours. Just
trying to keep up with the daily demands of life is daunting for
most; and there is a lack of trustworthy help when it's most
needed -- during vacations, a crisis or just a particularly hectic
week.
In the corporate sector, personal computers, email
and phone answering systems have resulted in less need for
receptionists and secretaries -- those hard-working people who
helped businesses run smoothly. They arranged executive travel,
took care of visitors, planned company holidays and celebrations
and made sure that part-time help filled in during stressful
times.
